Two dozen scientists on Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Falkor (too) sailed from Salvador, Bahia, into international waters to survey the midwater. That’s the dark zone between the sunlit surface and the seafloor. In two weeks they found 31 new species.
The haul includes nine jellyfish, seven siphonophores, seven comb jellies, four larvaceans, two giant single-celled rhizarians, an amphipod and a gossamer worm. A spinning-disc confocal microscope nicknamed “the Squid” let them watch living cells on board. That work normally takes weeks back on land.
Chief scientist Karen Osborn of the Smithsonian thinks the pace may be close to a record.
