A lunar eclipse happens when the Full Moon passes through Earth’s shadow: first the faint penumbra, then the dark umbra where sunlight is fully blocked.

Inside the umbra the Moon often turns copper-red as sunlight refracts through Earth’s atmosphere — the changing phases are what eclipse animations map in time.
