On April 6, 2026, as Orion swung around the Moon, the Artemis II crew photographed a crescent Earth sinking behind the lunar horizon. Moments later the spacecraft went behind the Moon and lost contact with Earth for about 40 minutes.
The sunlit slice of Earth includes Australia and Oceania. Ohm crater sits in the foreground. NASA points out the obvious echo of Bill Anders’ Earthrise photo from Apollo 8, 58 years earlier.
Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen are the first crew to fly around the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.
