Flying insects navigate remarkably well with a brain weighing less than a milligram. Prof Mandyam Srinivasan of the Queensland Brain Institute at the University of Queensland studies how honeybees use vision to control their flight speed, negotiate narrow passages, avoid mid-air collisions and make smooth landings. He also studies visually guided flight in birds, and uses these principles to design vision systems for autonomous aerial vehicles.
