Clean The Oceans

Concept render of an Ocean Cleanup collection platform floating at sea

On June 3, 2014, 19-year-old Boyan Slat's The Ocean Cleanup released a 530-page feasibility study of his plan to clean plastic from the oceans. Instead of ships chasing debris, long floating arms anchored to the seabed would let ocean currents carry plastic to collection platforms. The study concluded that almost half of the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch could be removed within ten years. The project then launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $2 million for large-scale pilot tests.
