Color Sand on Vibrating Metal

Sand forming a Chladni pattern on a vibrating metal plate

When a metal plate is made to vibrate at a resonant frequency, some lines on it stay still while the areas between them move. Sand sprinkled on the plate is bounced off the moving areas and settles on these still nodal lines, drawing a pattern. Raising the frequency produces more complex patterns. Ernst Chladni first showed these figures in the late 18th century by bowing plates covered in sand.
