An international team including Mike Letnic of the University of New South Wales has written the first detailed physical description of the genetically pure dingo. Published in the Journal of Zoology in 2014, it is based on 69 specimens collected before 1900, before dingoes had mixed with domestic dogs.
The study found that pure dingoes are not only yellow: they can also be tan, dark, black and tan, white, or sable. It also revived the scientific name Canis dingo, first proposed in 1793, so that the dingo is treated as its own species rather than as a subspecies of the wolf (Canis lupus dingo) or of the domestic dog.
