Protons are made of quarks and gluons. Physicists from the US, Japan and Australia predicted that a proton's internal structure changes when it sits inside an atomic nucleus. Electron-scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab were designed to test the idea. If confirmed, it would mean reinterpreting years of nuclear physics experiments.
