In CAR T-cell therapy, a patient's own T cells are collected, engineered to carry chimeric antigen receptors that recognize cancer, and infused back. In an early trial at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, 27 of 29 patients with advanced acute lymphoblastic leukemia went into remission. The treatment can trigger a dangerous cytokine-release syndrome, and the results were still early and unpublished at the time.
