Gas bottles hold liquefied gas under pressure. If a pressurised vessel ruptures, the sudden drop in pressure lowers the liquid's boiling point, so part of it boils at once into a rapidly expanding cloud of vapour. This is a boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion, or BLEVE. With a flammable gas such as LPG, the vapour can ignite into a fireball.
