The colossal squid has been filmed alive in the deep sea for the first time, and it’s a baby. The roughly 30 cm, glass-clear juvenile drifted past Schmidt Ocean Institute’s ROV SuBastian on March 9, 2025. It was about 600 m down near the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic, during an Ocean Census expedition.
The species was named exactly 100 years ago. Until now it was known mostly from remains in whale and seabird stomachs and from fishing catches. Adults are estimated to reach up to 7 m. Squid expert Kat Bolstad verified the footage.
