Four synthetic superheavy elements, with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118, now have official names, completing the seventh row of the periodic table. IUPAC approved them on 28 November 2016.
Nihonium (Nh, 113) was discovered at the RIKEN Nishina Center in Japan and is named after Nihon, a Japanese name for Japan. Moscovium (Mc, 115) and tennessine (Ts, 117) honour the Moscow region and Tennessee, home of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna and of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and its partners. Oganesson (Og, 118) is named after Yuri Oganessian, a pioneer of superheavy element research.
