In January 2016 rumours spread that LIGO had detected gravitational waves, ripples in spacetime predicted by Einstein's general relativity. LIGO said it had nothing to announce yet. On February 11, 2016 it confirmed the first direct detection: waves from two black holes merging about 1.3 billion light-years away.
