Hayli Gubbi, a shield volcano in Ethiopia’s Afar (Danakil) region, erupted at about 11:30 a.m. local time on November 23, 2025. Satellites caught the ash and gas plume rising to around 15 km and drifting northeast over the Red Sea and Yemen. It later reached as far as northern India and China and disrupted flights.

It’s the volcano’s first documented eruption. Many headlines said it was the first in 10,000 to 12,000 years, but that’s not solid. Geologists don’t know when it last erupted. Evidence points to some time in the last 8,000 years, possibly only centuries ago.

A magma intrusion from neighbouring Erta Ale, which erupted in July, probably helped wake it up.
