Krasheninnikov volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula erupted overnight on August 2–3, 2025, sending ash several kilometres high. It came days after the magnitude 8.8 earthquake that set off Pacific-wide tsunami alerts. It’s the volcano’s first eruption in recorded history.

How long it had been quiet depends on who you ask. Kamchatka’s volcano response team (KVERT) called it the first eruption in 600 years. The Smithsonian’s Global Volcanism Program lists its last known eruption as about 1550, roughly 475 years ago. Both dates come from geology, not eyewitnesses, so “about five to six centuries” is the honest range.

The volcano sits in a remote nature reserve, so the main hazard was ash for low-flying aircraft.
