Minnesota bans antibacterial soaps

Ball-and-stick model of the triclosan molecule

In 2014 Minnesota banned the retail sale of consumer cleaning products containing triclosan, an antibacterial ingredient in some soaps, body washes, toothpastes and cosmetics. The law took effect on January 1, 2017, with exceptions for products approved by the FDA.

Triclosan has been used in consumer products for more than 30 years, and a CDC study found it in the urine of 75% of people tested. Its effects on humans are unclear. Some studies link it to antibiotic resistance, though the evidence is mixed, and studies in rats showed lower thyroid hormone levels with long-term exposure.
