On 5 April 2021 a new fissure opened about a kilometre northeast of the original Geldingadalir vents on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula.

En-echelon cracks along the dyke path erupted curtains of fire and soon fed lava into neighboring valleys, forcing hikers to evacuate.
