The Doldrums Megatransform and Fracture Zone cuts across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge about 800 miles off northeast Brazil. A 35-day Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition led by MBARI’s Aaron Micallef found the first known vent fields there.
The bigger field has 23 vents, 13 of them active black smokers, over about 99,000 m². Fluids reached 280 °C, and thousands of blind Rimicaris shrimp live around them. Both fields look like rare hybrids that combine volcanic venting with serpentinisation, a reaction between mantle rock and seawater.
The team also saw two bigfin squid and filmed the barreleye fish Winteria telescopa alive for the first time. It was also the first science mission for the new AUV The Childlike Empress.
