After a year of checks, NASA said on September 10, 2025 that a core sample called “Sapphire Canyon” contains a potential biosignature. Perseverance drilled it in July 2024 from a rock nicknamed Cheyava Falls in Jezero Crater’s Bright Angel formation.

The rock has organic carbon and tiny “leopard spots” rimmed with the iron minerals vivianite and greigite. On Earth, reactions like these are often driven by microbes. The details were published in Nature.

“Potential” is doing real work here. Non-biological chemistry could also explain it. A firm answer needs the sample back in a lab on Earth.
