NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched at 7:26 a.m. EDT on August 30, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center. It’s now on a roughly three-month trip to the Sun-Earth L2 point, about a million miles from Earth. NASA says it came in ahead of schedule and on budget.
Roman combines a wide field of view with sharp infrared vision. Its 300-megapixel Wide Field Instrument can survey the sky about 1,000 times faster than Hubble, with dark energy, dark matter and exoplanets as its main targets. A coronagraph will test tech for imaging planets around other stars.
Expect about 1.4 TB of data a day, and first images by early 2027.
