The NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile showed its first images on June 23, 2025. They came from just over 10 hours of test observations with the LSST Camera, the largest digital camera ever built for astronomy.
The Trifid and Lagoon nebulae image stacks 678 exposures taken over about seven hours. A view of the Virgo Cluster holds around 10 million galaxies. In the same data Rubin found 2,104 new asteroids, including seven near-Earth objects, none of them a threat.
This was a test run. The 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time will film the whole southern sky every few nights.
