On June 12, 2009, astronauts on the International Space Station passed over Sarychev Peak in the Kuril Islands just as it erupted. Their photos show a column of ash and steam punching through the clouds, topped by a smooth white cap of condensed air, with a pyroclastic flow spreading at its base.
