Fiber networks usually stop at street cabinets, and copper carries data the "last mile" because home optical receivers are too expensive. Researchers at University College London designed a receiver with 75 to 80 percent fewer components that still reaches 10 Gb/s. It also lets one fiber carry both upstream and downstream data.
