The SkinGun, developed by Jörg Gerlach at the University of Pittsburgh’s McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, sprays a patient’s own skin cells onto a burn. Cells, including skin stem cells, are taken from a small patch of healthy skin, isolated in about 90 minutes and sprayed evenly over the wound, much like a paint gun covers a wall.
Growing sheets of replacement skin normally takes weeks, and patients can die of infection while they wait. With the spray, second-degree burns have healed in as little as four days.
