In 2013 Google and NASA jointly acquired a D-Wave Two, a quantum annealing machine. Instead of running ordinary logic, it uses superconducting qubits cooled near absolute zero to settle into low-energy states that encode solutions to optimization problems. Whether it beats classical computers on real tasks has been hotly debated, but it was one of the first commercial machines to put quantum effects to work.
