Physicists found that trees break at nearly the same critical wind speed, about 42 meters per second, whatever their size or species. Doubling a tree's size raises that speed by only about 9 percent, and tougher wood like oak instead of pine adds less than 10 percent. That may reflect evolution: winds on Earth rarely exceed 50 m/s.
