Molecular biologist Bonnie Bassler discovered that bacteria "talk" to each other using a chemical language. This signalling, called quorum sensing, lets them act together to coordinate defence and mount attacks. In her TED talk she explains how jamming these signals could become a new approach to antibiotics.
