On 7 February 2021 a fast debris surge tore down Chamoli’s Rishiganga and Dhauliganga valleys in Uttarakhand, destroying the Rishiganga hydropower plant and badly damaging the unfinished Tapovan–Vishnugad dam.
Early reports called it a glacial-lake outburst; later analysis showed a rock-and-ice avalanche from Ronti Peak that fluidized into a debris flow carrying house-sized boulders.
