In October 2015 Australia's High Court ruled unanimously that Myriad Genetics could not patent isolated BRCA1 gene sequences. Mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes sharply raise the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Breast cancer survivor Yvonne D'Arcy brought the case, arguing that a naturally occurring gene is not an invention.
